Save Guinea
SAVE GUINEA is the international charity project run by the Spirit in Dance Non-profit Association, the Franciscan Missionary Centre, Radio Company and Radio 80 as well as the Padova CROCE VERDE. It was started in 2010 to raise funds for two off-terrain vehicles fitted out as ambulances, two off-road vehicles for missions, a 4x4 site truck and a small coach for the school service to be donated to the Franciscan brothers’ missions in Guinea Bissau. These were requested by the missionaries themselves and in particular by the founding monk and honorary president of the Spirit in Dance Non-profit Association, Brother Michael Daniels. Funds also went towards expansion of the Cumura hospital, with the construction of five new wings, the first two of which will be the X-ray and CAT scan room and the analysis room. The Croce Verde and respective volunteers will be the first point of support both in practical and organisational terms.
After several fundraising initiatives by the Spirit in Dance Non-profit Association, the Padova Croce Verde and Abbraccio Company, the international Save Guinea humanitarian cooperation delegation left from Palazzo Moroni in Padova on Tuesday the 15th of February 2011: destination Guinea Bissau. The delegation was composed of 16 travellers, with the six vehicles that the project had raised the money for. The six vehicles set off after an official ceremony at the square of Palazzo Moroni in the generous presence of the Vice Mayor of Padova Ivo Rossi, the Councillor for Commerce for Padova Marta Dalla Vecchia, the President of the Province of Padova Barbara Degani, the Police Commissioner of Padova Luigi Mario Francesco Savina, the First Officer of the State Police Alessandro Oliva and the Episcopal Vicar of the City of Padova Don Valentino Squotti who blessed the travellers and vehicles. They were headed for the Franciscan mission in Guinea Bissau with 12 days of travel through Morocco, the Spanish Sahara, Mauritania and Senegal. On the 26th of February 2011 the six vehicles arrived at their destination, after no small number of adventures and problems which are well-documented on the Online Blog of traveller-journalist Renato Malaman. They were welcomed by Brother Michael and his brothers and lots of children and young people from the area who rushed to celebrate the efforts of the 16 travellers on the road, and of the six volunteers who reached the missions by plane in order to share in the visit and to see for themselves what they had been working for. The days that followed were filled with visits to the Franciscan missions and delivery of the donations with which the six vehicles were packed. On the 2nd of March 2011 after celebrations with the brothers and the population of the Cumura mission, the 22 travellers officially donated the six vehicles to the brothers, with joy in their hearts at finally seeing the project and the emotion of all the brothers, in particular the Superior Father Ernesto for whom the vehicles are truly important in order to continue improving their service in Guinea Bissau.
